What Is a VPN and How Does It Actually Work?
A VPN builds an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server the provider operates. Your traffic travels inside that tunnel, exits at the server, and continues to its destination carrying the server’s IP address instead of yours. Two things change as a result.
Your network operator stops seeing your destinations. Without a VPN, your ISP - or the cafe, hotel, or campus network you are on - can observe every domain you connect to; HTTPS hides the contents of those connections but not their existence. With a VPN active, the operator sees an encrypted stream to a single endpoint and nothing about what is inside it.
The sites you visit stop seeing your address. Websites, advertisers, and analytics platforms see the VPN server’s shared IP rather than the one your ISP assigned you, which breaks the simplest form of location tracking.

What a VPN Will Not Protect You From
Being precise about the limits is more useful than overselling the benefits.
It does not stop malware. Downloading a malicious file over an encrypted tunnel infects you exactly as fast. Reputable free VPNs are real products, not traps - but they solve a narrower problem than people expect.
What free tiers do well: securing a hotel or airport Wi-Fi session, basic browsing privacy, hiding your IP from casual tracking, and letting you evaluate a provider’s software before paying. How Much Speed Does a VPN Cost You?
Less than the marketing arms race implies. Routing through an extra server adds distance and processing, so some loss is unavoidable - but on a nearby server with a WireGuard-class protocol, current providers typically retain 80 to 90 percent of baseline throughput.
The important question is whether what remains is enough. Streaming 4K needs roughly 15 to 25 Mbps; 1080p needs 5 to 8. On a 200 Mbps line, even a 30 percent loss leaves enough for several simultaneous 4K streams. Speed only becomes a real constraint on slow connections or very long-distance hops.
